Exceptional flute and recorder lessons in South Shore, MA (Quincy, Weymouth, Braintree) from a teacher who earned the Master of Music in Flute Performance and the Master of Music in Flute Instruction from Saint-Petersburg State Conservatory, Russia and has over 17 years of teaching experience.
Since 1991, Yulia Berry has been a passionate and dedicated teacher, encouraging students to do more than just play the notes on the page. Her former students have been award winners at music competitions.
Flute lessons will be flexible, catering to each student’s needs. Students must be prepared to work hard and to put into practice the four major elements of good musicianship: intelligence, integrity, elegance and emotion.
ABOUT THE LESSONS
PHILOSOPHY:
"The dedication, enthusiasm, and experience I bring as a flute teacher allow my students to concentrate on more than just playing an instrument. Nurturing responsibility, encouraging patience and kindness, instilling musical sensitivity, and developing mind and listening skills are some of the special features of my teaching philosophy.
I focus on developing strong fundamental skills, like a diaphragm-based breathing, developing finger technique, ear training, working on tune, rich tone and vibrato. I have a lot of different exercises in my arsenal that will help to build these skills and draw on a variety of methods, depending on the individual interests and needs of the student.
Parts of solfeggio, world music history literature, music terminology and note literacy are included in the lessons.
Music from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic and Contemporary Periods is incorporated into the lesson.
Emphasizes on the importance of musicianship. Duets, two flute performances, instrumental ensembles are often implemented in my teaching sessions.
The other important parts of my lessons include:
- injury prevention (prevention of pain, tension, fatigue)
- overcoming performance anxiety
Effective practice strategies to maximize productivity:
- aesthetic interpretation and musical organization
- effective use of the musical body
- guidance through the entire performance preparation process
- performance feedback through audio and video analysis"
Yulia Berry is currently accepting new students.

Reviews By JimW from Quincy, MA Posted Jul 15, 2014 Here's an update. I spent much of the past 5 years studying with Yulia on a weekly basis and gotten tremendous results. I can perform demanding works by Bach, Mozart and the other greats and I can also play the flute very well in improvised settings , jazz, blues , rock etc. She has been consistently helpful throughout this time and made it possible for me to get much further with the instrument than I had hoped to. There are many good teachers in this area but she is the rare exceptional teacher. I've been able to hear the progress of many of her young students and it is quite impressive. If you or your child are really serious about the flute she is exactly the right teacher. By Jim W from Quincy, MA Posted Apr 4, 2009 I am a new student with Yulia and she is simply fantastic. I have many years of saxophone experience and I know music. It is clear to me that she is an exceptional teacher and it will be anyone's good fortune to study with her. For anyone at any level she is a rare gem of a teacher with both the passion and the skill for what she does.
